She's With Me

A Feminist Survival Guide to Seattle

Alka Kurian: Gender and Indian Cinema

When: Thursday, Oct 27, 3 – 4:30pm
Where: UW Seattle Campus, Allen Library North, Allen Auditorium, ground floor
Cost: FREE

Alka Kurian, UW Bothell senior lecturer, addresses varied representations of gender in Indian cinema, exploring treatment of women on screes, the shifts and transformations of their representational journey.
How do filmmakers mobilize the image of women to differentiate Indian cinema from the West? How does the dualistic portrayal of femininity within the good/bad binary divide stereotype Indian screen women and undermine their realism?

In conjunction with the exhibit, Envisaging South Asia: Images, Art and Scholarship, on display through October 31, 2016 in Allen Library North

About sheswithmeseattle

She's With Me is the brain child of three feminists who got tired of emailing each other every time they caught wind of a womanist event, so they created a separate space to house their feminist calendar. The benefits would be twofold: fewer emails cluttering up their inboxes, and more people learning about Seattle's growing feminist community. She's With Me aims to be a feminist hub, where all the goings on of different organizations are collected in one place. Our plans for the site include reviews/write-ups of events, interviews with local feminist activists, news updates, and essays, poetry, and art by feminists. The Fourth Wave of Feminism is here, and She's With Me will be the feminist scrap book documenting our herstory as it unfolds.
