Seattle Black Feminists will be discussing perspectives on Black feminism and Womanism. Here’s what Acquanda, of SBF, writes:
“I know that many Black women subscribe to one or the other — feminist and womanist, but what is interesting is that (often what I’ve heard) when Black women say they are not feminists they are asked if they are womanists instead — because of the history of mainstream feminism being largely a white woman centered ‘thing,’ and the fact that Alice Walker coined womanism, which has been said to center Black women’s outlook.”
Here is a great intro to the topic, provided by SBF, from Whitney Battle-Baptiste’s book Black Feminist Archaeology, Constructing a Black Feminist Framework.
