PUSSY RIOT is a Russian feminist punk protest group based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, they have risen to global visibility over the last several years by staging unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations. Their lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they regard as a dictator, and links between Putin and the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2012, in a controversial ruling, three of the group members were jailed for hooliganism.

Upon their release from prison in 2013 as part of a number of pardons issued by the Russian government just before the Sochi Winter Olympics, Pussy Riot members Nadya Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina founded Zona Prava (Zone of Rights), an international NGO whose goal is to aid those who may be deprived of liberty in camps and prisons, but are not willing to be stripped of their dignity.

Following a screening of the documentary film “Pussy vs. Putin”, Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina will engage in a moderated discussion with local Russian expert Mariana Markova.

About sheswithmeseattle

She's With Me is the brain child of three feminists who got tired of emailing each other every time they caught wind of a womanist event, so they created a separate space to house their feminist calendar. The benefits would be twofold: fewer emails cluttering up their inboxes, and more people learning about Seattle's growing feminist community. She's With Me aims to be a feminist hub, where all the goings on of different organizations are collected in one place. Our plans for the site include reviews/write-ups of events, interviews with local feminist activists, news updates, and essays, poetry, and art by feminists. The Fourth Wave of Feminism is here, and She's With Me will be the feminist scrap book documenting our herstory as it unfolds.
