She's With Me

A Feminist Survival Guide to Seattle

The Sex Myth

When: Tuesday, January 26, 6:30-8:30pm
Where: The Comet Tavern, 922 E Pike; this location is 21+
Cost: Free; RSVP here

The NARAL Millennial Advisory Council will be hosting a conversation on Rachel Hills’ book The Sex Myth: The Gap Between Our Fantasies and Reality. (Rachel interviewed me while conducting research for this book, so I’m in it!)

Fifty years after the sexual revolution, we are told that we live in a time of unprecedented sexual freedom; that if anything, we are too free now… Hills argues that we are controlled by a new brand of sexual convention: one which influences all of us–woman or man, straight or gay, liberal or conservative. At the root of this silent code lies the Sex Myth–the defining significance we invest in sexuality that once meant we were dirty if we “did” have sex, and now means we are defective if we “don’t” do it enough.

About sheswithmeseattle

She's With Me is the brain child of three feminists who got tired of emailing each other every time they caught wind of a womanist event, so they created a separate space to house their feminist calendar. The benefits would be twofold: fewer emails cluttering up their inboxes, and more people learning about Seattle's growing feminist community. She's With Me aims to be a feminist hub, where all the goings on of different organizations are collected in one place. Our plans for the site include reviews/write-ups of events, interviews with local feminist activists, news updates, and essays, poetry, and art by feminists. The Fourth Wave of Feminism is here, and She's With Me will be the feminist scrap book documenting our herstory as it unfolds.
