She's With Me

A Feminist Survival Guide to Seattle

FBC: Inside the Gender Jihad

When: Saturday, February 1st at 3PM
Where: NW 85th St & 21st Ave NW (you must RSVP to get exact address)

Feminist Bookclubbers are meeting up to discuss Amina Wadud’s book, Inside the Gender Jihad: Women’s Reform in Islam. From Amazon: “In this engaging study, Dr Amina Wadud, an Afro-American Muslim herself, introduces the feminist movement in Islam and delves into its challenges, its textual foundations in the Qur’an and its achievements. Beginning with her own place in the effort for greater justice for women in Islam, Wadud goes on tackle a number of pertinent issues, including the state of Muslim women’s studies as a discipline in mainstream academia and the role of Muslim women in the domestic space.”

This is an important topic, especially in light of Islamophobia in the U.S. and Europe and popular misconceptions about the experiences of Muslim women. It’s definitely going on our reading lists!

About sheswithmeseattle

She's With Me is the brain child of three feminists who got tired of emailing each other every time they caught wind of a womanist event, so they created a separate space to house their feminist calendar. The benefits would be twofold: fewer emails cluttering up their inboxes, and more people learning about Seattle's growing feminist community. She's With Me aims to be a feminist hub, where all the goings on of different organizations are collected in one place. Our plans for the site include reviews/write-ups of events, interviews with local feminist activists, news updates, and essays, poetry, and art by feminists. The Fourth Wave of Feminism is here, and She's With Me will be the feminist scrap book documenting our herstory as it unfolds.
